Texas Moon

I created this on location in Benbrook . It is always an inspiring place to visit and paint with friends. When I first arrived the sun was slowly rising and the moon was setting. The sky was changing quickly. By the time I set up the moon was gone, but it was an image I wanted to include. I love that plein air painting gets us outside connecting to nature.

I created this during a workshop I attended with Jim McDonald. The workshop was at the Shanley House in Granbury, hosted by the Lake Granbury Art Association. His words of wisdom and easy manner made it a incredible experience. Jim works quickly and from memory, only painting what really moves him. It was so inspiring and freeing to apply his technique to my paintings.

Gold Impressions

This is the 2nd painting I worked on when visiting the Ennis area. We were fortunate find sunflowers, even if they were the smaller ones. I turned my easel around and found a new view. Plein air painting in a field of sunflowers makes my heart sing.

You may wonder how I can do two paintings in one setting. I come prepared with paints premixed and ready to go. I usually tone my canvas with a warm color. I use a palette knife to spread the paint around quickly. The design and paint goes on in a spontaneous approach. I don’t get too fussy with details and I work fast. This is what make plein air painting an exciting process.

I met up with friends to paint on Lake Weatherford. Doug Clark researched the area to scout painting opportunities before hand. It was a gray hazy morning with cooler temperatures and a nice breeze. It was fun to see everyones interpretation of the same subject. He always finds great places to eat too! We painted for a couple hours and went next door to Tavern on the Lake . It was a great day topped off with a great lunch. Thanks Doug Clark

Holiday Park Wildflowers

I met up with my artist friends to paint at Holiday Park on Benbrook Lake yesterday. The hills and surrounding landscape are dotted with wildflowers. There are still some blue bonnets with the reds and yellows starting to show. It really is a beautiful area this time of the year. We attended a wedding in the Japanese Gardens in Ft. Worth. We arrived just as the sun was setting and casting a golden light on everything. This was in early March, so a lot of the spring bushes were in bloom. It was a magical walk through the gardens to join the wedding party.

I am constantly on the lookout for interesting shapes and color. I study light and patterns the shadows makes. The image for this painting was filled the elements I like to include in painting. This was inspired from a walk through a neighborhood near work. It has strong darks and the bright lights of a North Texas Fall. Using brushes and palette knife, I carved out texture and color. It was a joy to create.
