Autumn's Color Palette
9x12 oil on ampersand board
This new painting is inspired from the colorful landscape in my area. The vibrant colors of fall and shadows of the trees are what caught my eye. The hard surface of the ampersand board provides a nice surface to build up texture using the palette knife.

Reflections of Autumn 9x12 oil on cradled hardboard panel
This was inspired from painting at this location a few years ago. It was fun to revisit this small stream in the Glen Rose area. The fall colors reflecting in the water is what made me want to paint this little gem.

Our fall weather has been a roller coaster of temperatures. I try to take advantage of the warmer days and get out and paint. My friend Jill and I went to one or our favorite locations and captured the fall colors. Comanche Peak is the highest point around here and provides plenty of painting opportunities.

The fall light on this cluster of trees made the colors sing. The brilliant sun cast a glow on the grasses, sumac and cottonwood trees. I was excited to capture this scene on canvas.

This was a view of a ranch from the road side where I set up to paint. There are views in all direction and there is a place to pull off the road. I can find nice views I want to paint, but there is not always a place to park. This is just one of the challenges of a plein air painter.

Palette Knife Technique
Saturday, November 23rd | 10am to 2pm
Come join us in the gallery as artist Sheri Jones demonstrates her signature palette knife technique. Sheri says, “Painting outside surrounded by all the color is a place I love to be.” Painting outside on location allows her to see more color and depth than working from photos alone, but plein air painting comes with its own unique set of challenges. The light is in constant motion changing the landscape minute by minute. The palette knife allows her to get more paint on faster and block in large, base shapes quickly so she can capture the scene before her. This is an informal setting, so drop by anytime between 10am and 2pm to visit with Sheri.

This is part of my series of the pollen seekers. This butterfly looks similar to the Agraulis Vanillae also known as a passion butterfly on passiflora leaf. The passion flower from my garden and attracts the butterflies.

Spider Lily Blooms 20x16 oil on raymar canvas panel
My garden had more of these bloom I've ever seen. I had to stop and take the time to paint them. I started on a dark canvas and carved out the flower, adding color and texture to the background. They are a welcome sign of fall and cooling temperatures.

Good Morning Fly Over 11x14 oil on canvas panel
I recently visited Lake Texoma and took my kayak. I took it out in the early morning to take advantage of mild conditions. The heron birds were nesting all around and would take off as I approached the shore. Its was a great time to disconnect and enjoy the scenery.

Snow on the Mountain Flowers 8x10 oil on canvas
When you see fields and fields of white flowers you pull over to snap a few photos. They bloom in late August and are a sign cooler weather is on the way. It is the same with milkweed and purple thistle flowers. I read this from my former biology teacher's post recently. I didn't know this and will pay closer attention next year.

This is another plein air painting from my trip to Lake Texoma. Three sisters and a brother in law painted along with me. They each choose their own subjects and enjoyed the pleasant weather and views. We created a beautiful memory of time spent with family.
