Morning Melody

Morning Melody

16 x20 oil on linen canvas

Getting up early to witness a beautiful sunrise was a way to reward myself for going to work. Now that I am retired I can paint those sunrises from photos I took every day, 5 days a week. One of life's sweet rewards.

Behind Every Cloud

Behind Every Cloud

16x20 oil on canvas

This painting started as a demo for the Waxahachie Art Association. With all this down time I am finding unfinished paintings and working on them.

Remember every cloud has a silver lining. You should not feel hopeless with the recent events.  Difficult times lead to better days.  Use this time to catch up on unfinished projects and enjoy the process.

Morning Light Show

Morning Light Show 12x16 oil on linen panel

I created this as a demo for the Mansfield Art Association.  When planning this painting I did a value study and a small color study. I've also created a 9x12 of the same scene. When I put so much in the planning the execution is a spontaneous reaction.I touched it up a bit in the studio, signed  it and called it finished.

The sun was breaking through the horizon when I drove up to the lake.     This is one of my favorite views of Benbrook Lake.  The morning clouds were full of light and color. This was painted with a palette knife and lots of colorful paint

A Morning Sunny

A Morning Sunny 14x11 oil on canvas

Wow, this was a fun one to paint. This one seemed to paint itself.  This was based on one of my sunrise photos taken on the road to Ft. Worth from Granbury. A lot of the area is undeveloped and pleasing to the soul.

Here Comes the Sun

Here Comes the Sun 11x14 oil on canvas

Here comes the sun with the promise of a beautiful day. Seeing a spectacular sunrise can change my attitude for the rest of the day. It is such a joy to recreate one on canvas. I created a short time lapse video of the start of this you can see at the bottom of my website or on the Instagram site.

Lily Garden Sunrise

Lily Garden Sunrise

20x20 oil on canvas

I created this from a couple of small studies I created at Clark Gardens in Weatherford, Texas. I did ramp up the colors and texture.  Combining the warms and cool colors together was a balancing act.

Morning Meadow

Morning Meadow 8x10 oil on canvas

Cool morning light is what inspired this painting. Just as the sun peeks over the tree tops the colors and shapes come to life.

After witnessing this gorgeous sunrise, I couldn't wait to paint it.

The clouds seemed to swirl in a design pointed to the sun.

It makes me grateful for a day filled with promise. This was created using my palette knife and lots of creamy colors.

Working in a series of the same landscape has been a great way to explore new color combinations.

I wanted to suggest first morning's light with this painting.

Capturing the golden light and adding texture makes this one of my favorites.

Do you have a favorite in this series?

Allure of An Early Morning

Allure of An Early Morning 10x8 oil on cradle panel

The warm winter grasses inspired this painting.  I started this with a quick thumbnail sketch and recorded color notes on the side.  I used a Winsor & Newton paper that is designed for oil paints.  It's a great way to explore color combinations and design.

I will be at Dutch Art Gallery this Saturday, March 9th from 10-2 doing a painting demonstration. Please stop by and check out my process and new paintings.

Gentle Morning Color

Gentle Morning Color 16x20 oil on canvas

I am working on a series of landscape and exploring new color combinations. I love to premix my grays and find complementary colors to compliment them.  I work until the colors on the palette are appealing to me.  After I have piles of paint to work from I begin.
