Wild Flower Season

Wildflower Season

16x20 oil on linen

As the weather warms up the flowers warm up.  The landscape is covered with beautiful color during the wildflower season. The reds are what are called Indian blankets . They are a gorgeous color of red that blankets the landscape. The yellow flowers are a variety shades and shapes. This painting is part observation, field study and my imagination. Using the palette knife. It’s filled with brilliant color and texture.

Red Hot Geraniums

Red Hot Geraniums

New 12x12 oil on wood cradle board

My garden is a great source of inspiration. I love planting geraniums in this clay pot just for the color alone. The great shadows are an added bonus. Painting on a hard service with the palette knife is a great way to build up color and texture. Painted with a joy in my heart.

Poppies in the Sunrise

Poppies in the Sunrise

10x20 oil on canvas

This painting was inspired from a garden on a very busy road. When I saw the bright red poppies, I turned around. This garden also had roses, peonies and small yellow flowers. Add all that and the rising sun was a painting in the makings. Using the palette knife and carving this scene out was a fun exercise.

Painted Meadow Demo

Painted Meadow Demo

14x11 Oil on wood panel

I created this as a demo for the Lake Granbury Art Association. I used my plein air sketch, a preliminary drawing and photo to create this. I discussed plein air painting and the use of the palette knife. I changed the format from landscape to portrait. It was a fun night with a great group of artist.

Painted Meadow

Painted Meadow

8x10 oil on linen panel

I have plans to do a painting demo at the Lake Granbury Art Association on Monday, May 10th. I will be demonstrating my palette knife process and talking about plein air painting. There is also a workshop coming up on Saturday, May 15th 9-4. Let me know if you would be interested in either and I can provide more info.

The indian paint brush and queen annes lace were a sight I found at Hunter's Park on Lake Granbury. I was so excited to find this combo I returned the next day with paints in hand. This was a quick study and will provide my inspiration for the demo.

Spring Blues

Spring Blues 9x12 oil on canvas

This is an older plein air painting that I reworked recently. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what a painting needs. This is from the High Hope Ranch in Glen Rose. They always have fields and fields of wild flowers.

River Reflections

River Reflections

7x14 oil on canvas

I had the joy of painting on the river on Monday. The weather was mild with low winds. Today we woke up to temperatures in the 30's.

It was a peaceful way to spend the afternoon with friend and fellow artist, Suzy.

A Path to the River

A Path to the River

11x14 oil on linen canvas

When I prepared for my demo at Pecan Plantation Art Guild I went out to the location and did several small studies. I wanted options on what I painted for the group. This is the first I considered. Here you can see the photo and small study I worked from. I loved that the blue bonnets were blooming and scattered about the landscape. I tried to simplify the design, but decided it was too much for a demo.

From the Garden

From the Garden

14x11 oil on gallery wrapped canvas

Taking the time to plant a garden and reap the benefits are one of my pleasures in life. This is from a photo I took last year when my sunflowers and larkspurs were blooming. I loved the birds eye view of the blue vase against the round stool it was setting on.

Spring has sprung and I am surrounded by bright happy flowers. This is a warm up to what is inspiring me recently. I pre mixed my colors and with the palette knife I dabbled the paint on. I purposely left the first layer of alizarin crimson peeking through.

Jim

Jim

10 x8 oil on canvas panel

This is a 2 hour painting I did at our drawing group. We meet up at the Shanley House with Lake Granbury Art Association once a week. Models normally sit for 20 minute sessions, 10 minute breaks for 3 hours. This was Jim's first time to model for us. He stated it was very relaxing and a good experience. We are always looking for volunteers!
